Key Insights Three: Unlocking Alias through Kindness and Advocacy

Finding sympatherizers through Honors Engaging the Legacy of Anne Frank and the Gamecock CommUnity Shop

This page highlights my experiences in an honors history class and my volunteer work with the Gamecock CommUnity Shop. Through both of these opportunities, I discovered the profound impact of using our helping muscles, which drives me to provide little acts of kindness. This principle is a foundation of my personal and career development, and I am confident it will guide me throughout my journey in dentistry.

Key Insight

In today’s society, the call for upstanders is more critical than ever. We often sit back and miss countless opportunities to support one another. Being an upstander has been a recurring theme in my life, often without my conscious realization. An upstander, in contrast to a bystander, is someone who actively speaks out for what is morally right. While we may recognize the importance of standing up, making that choice isn’t always easy. Too often, our society allows these critical moments to slip away, turning potential upstanders and bystanders. Our culture can feel self-centered, but even a small act of kindness can have a monumental effect on someone in need. Since we can never fully understand the struggles others endure beneath their surface, it is essential for us to act with empathy and integrity. Now, more than ever, it is vital to take a stand and uplift those around us, rather than passively witnessing our peers being crushed and marginalized. Today is the time to step forward, fostering a community where everyone feels seen, valued, and empowered to thrive. We have a responsibility to champion kindness and justice, creating a culture where everyone feels empowered and supported.

According to the Mental Health Foundation, helping others not only benefits them, but also enhances our own mental well-being, fostering an environment filled with positivity and happiness. Simple gestures, like greeting someone with a warm "good morning" or truly listening to them, can brighten someone’s day in ways we may never fully realize. When we take the time to connect, we create ripples of positivity; the recipient may reflect on that moment long after it’s passed, finding solace and encouragement in the interaction. This shared connection is where our inner satisfaction and motivation blossom, reminding us of the profound impact we can have on each other's lives.

This concept truly came to life in my honors college course, SCHC 326: The Legacies of Anne Frank: A History for Today. This class has given me the incredible opportunity to educate my fellow students at the University of South Carolina about the importance of being upstanders, all while illuminating Anne Frank’s story. Giving tours at the only affiliated Anne Frank House in North America has provided me with the incredible opportunity to share Anne’s story and what it means to be an upstander. I emphasize the historical context of Hitler’s rise to power, drawing parallels between the U.S. and Germany then and now. Most importantly, I reflect on the challenges faced by those who sought to help Jewish victims during that dark time, honoring the courage of those who stood up against injustice. The bravery of those who risked their lives to hide and protect her family during a time when being discovered by the Nazis meant certain death reflects the profound power of compassion and solidarity. During World War II, people across Europe faced severe food scarcity and hunger. In this context, farms played a crucial role in alleviating these challenges by growing and distributing food to support their communities. The efforts of local farmers were vital in ensuring that food supplies reached those in need, helping to sustain families and communities during this difficult time. Hearing the stories of all of the helpers, but especially Anne’s helpers, has been inspiring; their courageous actions serve as a powerful reminder that we can all take similar steps today to prevent further tragedies. This legacy of standing up for what is right compels me to act and uplift others in my community.

Community service embodies the spirit of upstanding behavior, and my experience volunteering at the Gamecock Community Shop has given me a powerful platform to combat hunger directly. Just as food scarcity during WWII highlighted the urgent need to combat hunger, I recognize the importance of addressing this issue in my Gamecock community. Ensuring that everyone has access to nutritious food is vital for fostering resilience and support among us. Each client who walks through our doors is greeted with a warm "good morning" and a genuine inquiry about their day—because sometimes, that simple connection can make all the difference. I believe that random acts of kindness can have a far-reaching impact, often beyond what we can see. I strive to offer any assistance needed to help individuals provide for themselves and their families, recognizing that it can be challenging to prioritize nutritional value when the immediate concern is simply finding a meal for the day. Continuing my work at the pantry is essential not only for enhancing my own mental well-being but also for uplifting our customers and actively addressing hunger on our campus. Each interaction reinforces the importance of compassion, showing that we all have the power to stand up and make a meaningful difference in our community.
